Seals

We were fascinated by these unique creatures – so ungainly on land but powerful in the water

We saw plenty of seals on our landings and from the ship – but invariably sitting on ice floes or beaches. Unlike the whales and penguins, it was near-impossible to see them in their more natural environment, swimming through the water. On land, they looked lugubrious, lazy and amusing. But we were assured appearances are deceiving, especially Leopard seals, which we were horrified to learn eat penguins!

And finally, one of the more macabre ones, not as pretty or fun, but perhaps more powerful . . .
